But just how do you approach assessing and contrasting programs so that you can make the right selection? Many future students begin their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are close to their homes. After they have located some area schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are important concerns when assessing vet tech programs, they are not the only significant ones when making your evaluations. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation need to be looked into also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary technician programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate decision. We have furnished several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the various responsibilities of veterinary technicians and the training alternatives available.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Tech

Tatitlek AK vet technician holding dogAmong the first decisions that you will have to make is whether you wish to train as a veterinary assistant, technologist or technician. Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main determiner will undoubtedly be which specialty interests you the most. What technicians and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Tatitlek AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training compared with assistants and typically obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated duties, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and basically perform the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Tatitlek AK labs or research facilities as well.

Vet Tech Online Programs Offered

Tatitlek AK student attending online vet tech programAn approach that may make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using multiple methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Tatitlek AK veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, for instance for traveling and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make certain that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech school may be the perfect choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Tatitlek AK vet tech schoolsBy now you should have selected which veterinarian degree that you wish to earn, and if you want to study online or attend a school on campus. Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in the Tatitlek AK area and across the USA, you must ask some qualifying questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other significant qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the vet tech schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the vet tech school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding screening process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is in many cases a requirement for employment for many Tatitlek AK area veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet college or vocational school and program you enroll in must have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include looking on online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions concerning your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, contact some Tatitlek AK vet clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet tech is to work in a clinical setting. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs set up with Tatitlek AK veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help build relationships in the local veterinarian community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician program can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A lower rate could suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might mean that the college has an excellent reputation within the Tatitlek AK veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Tatitlek AK programs you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from your Tatitlek AK home, you must confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the school is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes might be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you ascertain if the veterinarian schools you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Tatitlek AK. Others may only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss due to sickness, work or family emergencies. You might find that an online school is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary education into your active life.
