We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the varied duties of vet techs and the training options available.

The Job of a Veterinary Technician

Takotna AK vet technician holding dogAmong the initial decisions that you will need to make is whether you plan to train as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. Part of your preference might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the principal determiner will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What technicians and assistants have in common is that they each work under the direct direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are numerous jobs that they can carry out within the Takotna AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the conventional vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more complex tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically perform the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years. So the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Takotna AK laboratories or research facilities also.

Since the classes are provided via the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Takotna AK veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, such as for commuting and study materials, can be more affordable compared to more standard classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet tech school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Vet Tech Programs

Questions to ask Takotna AK vet tech schoolsBy now you should have selected which veterinary credential that you would like to attain, and if you prefer to study online or attend a program on campus. Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, trade and vocational schools in the Takotna AK area as well as across the USA, you must ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many prospective students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other essential qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And of course you need to choose a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the veterinary technician programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the veterinary technician college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Takotna AK area veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include looking on online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Takotna AK veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They may even suggest one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet tech is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the schools you are considering have internship programs arranged with Takotna AK veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help build relationships in the local veterinarian community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet tech school may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A lower rate may mean that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, verify that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the college has an outstanding reputation within the Takotna AK vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might indicate that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Takotna AK colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Okay, we previously talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to commute to your veterinary technician classes from your Takotna AK home, you have to make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the college is located near or in a large city. In addition, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. Of course taking classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you ascertain if the vet schools you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Takotna AK. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies. You might discover that an online school is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.
