After all, you need to find and enroll in a school that will furnish the proper training to ensure that you can be successful as a vet tech. But just how do you approach assessing and comparing programs so that you can make the proper selection? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by looking for schools that are close to their homes. When they have identified some local colleges, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are important factors when comparing veterinary technician programs, they are not the only significant ones when making your comparisons. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs should be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the vet tech programs you are considering before you make a final selection. We have provided several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the varied roles of veterinary technicians and the training options offered.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Technician

Petersburg AK vet technician holding dogOne of the initial decisions that you will need to make is whether you wish to train as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. Part of your determination might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What technicians and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of tasks that they can carry out within the Petersburg AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the standard vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complex undertakings, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training in contrast to assistants and typically earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are involved in more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes 4 years. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Petersburg AK laboratories or research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Technician Schools Offered

Petersburg AK student attending online vet tech programAn option that may be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using various methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Petersburg AK veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for example for traveling and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just be sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online vet tech program may be the perfect choice for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Technician Programs

Questions to ask Petersburg AK vet tech schoolsAt this point you should have decided on which veterinarian credential that you want to obtain, and if you intend to study online or attend a program on campus. Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in the Petersburg AK area as well as across the USA, you must ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many potential students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already touched on other significant qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to enroll in a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the veterinary technician schools that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the vet tech college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous screening process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a precondition for employment for a number of Petersburg AK area veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary field. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your specific schools. As a final tip, call some Petersburg AK vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They might even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective approach to obtain practical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs set up with Petersburg AK veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help build connections in the local vet community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech college may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A low rate could mean that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the program has an exceptional reputation within the Petersburg AK vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might indicate that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Petersburg AK schools you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we previously talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from your Petersburg AK home, you must make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the school is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online might be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you determine if the veterinary programs you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night near Petersburg AK. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of work, sickness or family issues. You might find that an online school is the ideal way to fit your vet education into your busy life.

    Petersburg, Alaska

Petersburg (Tlingit: Gantiyaakw SĂ©edi "Steamboat Channel") is a census-designated place (CDP) in Petersburg Borough, Alaska, United States. The population was 2,948 at the 2010 census, down from 3,224 in 2000.

The borough encompasses Petersburg and Kupreanof, plus mostly uninhabited areas stretching to the Canadian–American border and the southern boundary of the City and Borough of Juneau.[1][2] While the city of Petersburg ceased to exist as a separate administrative entity (the borough assembly created a service area to assume operation of the former city's services), the tiny city of Kupreanof remains separate within the borough.[3]

Tlingits from Kupreanof Island had long used a summer fish camp at the north end of Mitkof Island. Earlier cultures of indigenous people also used the island: remnants of fish traps and some petroglyphs have been carbon-dated back some 1,000 years.
