We have furnished several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the varied roles of vet techs and the training options available.

The Function of a Veterinary Technician

Kotlik AK vet technician holding dogAmong the first decisions that you will have to make is if you desire to train as a vet technician, assistant or technologist. Part of your preference might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the main factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are a number of functions that they can carry out within the Kotlik AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the typical veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or trade school. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complicated undertakings, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training in contrast to assistants and typically acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated duties, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Kotlik AK labs or research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Technician Programs Offered

Kotlik AK student attending online vet tech programAn alternative that may make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Kotlik AK veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for instance for traveling and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just confirm that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online veterinary technician school may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Tech Programs

Questions to ask Kotlik AK vet tech schoolsAt this point you should have decided on which veterinarian credential that you want to obtain, and if you prefer to study online or attend a college on campus. Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, trade and vocational schools in the Kotlik AK area as well as across the Country, you should ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our opening, many prospective students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to choose a school that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the veterinary technician schools that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary technician program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is frequently a precondition for employment for a number of Kotlik AK area veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions regarding your targeted schools. As a final pointer, phone some Kotlik AK veterinary clinics that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best means to get practical hands on experience as a vet tech is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs established with Kotlik AK veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local veterinary community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech program can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate might indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could signify that the program has an outstanding reputation within the Kotlik AK veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Kotlik AK schools you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we already talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your veterinary technician classes from your Kotlik AK home, you have to make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the college is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you determine if the veterinary programs you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Kotlik AK. Others may only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss because of sickness, work or family issues. You might find that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your active life.
